4 Often Overlooked Ways to Make Your Warehouse Safer and More Secure

Western Storage and Handling Blog

When it comes to protecting your warehouse, it’s important to implement equipment and design strategies that will protect your most valuable asset: Your employees! WSH is proud to be an innovator in designing and installing safe warehouse systems and operations that offer complete safety measures for every corner of your warehouse. We take a close look at each individual operation to design a system and workflow that increases productivity while protecting employees and goods. In addition, we work with industry-leading warehouse equipment manufacturers like  Heartland Steel, Ideal Shield Products, and Wirecrafters to provide customers with a full range of high-quality products that work to create a safe work environment at every turn.

Here are 4 of our most popular options for making your warehouse operation safer for employees.

1. Create paths using guardrails to reduce forklift incidents and prevent personal injuries

Using walkways designed for forklifts is crucial for keeping foot and forklift traffic separate and preventing forklift-pedestrian accidents. Guardrail paths do even more to create safe spaces between employees and machinery, providing visual cues and alerts to forklift operations and pedestrians in their zones. Guardrails can also be used to control access to certain areas, reducing the chance of unauthorized personnel entering off-limit areas. Guardrail paths and forklift walkways are especially beneficial in high-traffic areas, and are often required to be installed by compliance regulatory bodies. 2. Use pallet stops and rack backs to keep pallets and products from falling

Pallet stops and pallet rack backs are another critical part of creating a safe warehouse operation. These guards help keep products from spilling over the edges of racks, keeping them in place and preventing dangerous accidents. More specifically, pallet stops sit at the end of pallet racks, working to prevent pallets from being pushed too deep into the row and falling off the other side. On the other hand, rack backs, also known as safety netting, give complete coverage to the backs of racks and prevent any inventory from accidentally spilling over racks. Wire mesh panels also allow for clear visibility between rows, making it easier to see inventory levels and identify product types. They allow for air flow and ventilation and can be customized during install and reorganized down the line as inventory needs change.

3. Use guards like post protectors, end-of-row protectors, and aisle guards

Post and row protectors are essential safety components in warehouse operations that protect both the structural integrity of the racking systems and the safety of staff. Post protectors, which are installed around the base of racking posts, work to absorb impacts from warehouse machinery such as forklifts. By preventing damage to uprights, they help maintain the overall strength of the system, preventing potential collapses and injury.

End-of-row protectors work in a similar way by shielding the exposed ends of racking rows, which can often be the most vulnerable part of a pallet rack system. Aisle guards are another key component of a safe pallet rack system, working to prevent machinery from accidentally veering into storage areas and inventory.

4. Use mirror domes to eliminate blind spots

Mirror domes, also known as convex mirrors, are a simple safety device that can help enhance visibility throughout your warehouse. They provide a wide-angle view for forklift operators and pedestrians, allowing workers to see traffic from all directions and significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents at these critical junctures.
